This is a simple, non–invasive, gastrointestinal test that you perform in your home and mail back to our clinic laboratory. It detects bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine and is used to diagnose Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). This test measures both hydrogen and methane gasses for the best possible SIBO assessment.
SIBO is a common gastrointestinal disorder that lead to the common IBS symptoms of bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation/ irregularity, and abdominal pain. SIBO activity can also result in many extra-GI symptoms including insomnia, anxiety, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, migraines, headaches, muscle pain and many other symptoms that escape diagnosis.
This test requires a 1-2 day preparation diet, an overnight fast and 3-hours of collection time. If you are constipated or tend towards constipation without laxitive or supplement support, you should perform a 2-day prepration diet.
Glucose is included and is used as a challenge substrate; glucose feeds the small intestinal bacteria so they can measured. If you are diabetic or have some other condition that does not allow for the use of glucose, it is recommended to use a lactulose version of this test; which requires a drug prescription and can not be ordered online. Call our office if you have questions.
