The term irritable bowel disease (IBD) encompasses chronic inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Nutritional deficiencies are common in individuals with IBD due to various factors, including inflammation, malabsorption, and dietary restrictions.


Common Nutritional Deficiencies Associated with IBD
  • Iron Deficiency Anemia: Chronic inflammation and bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract can lead to iron deficiency anemia. This is especially common in individuals with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, as blood loss can occur through the inflamed tissues.

  • Vitamin B12 Deficiency: The terminal ileum, which is often affected in Crohn's disease, is essential for the absorption of vitamin B12. Inflammation or surgical removal of this part of the intestine can lead to vitamin B12 deficiency.

  • Folate Deficiency: Malabsorption of folate can occur in individuals with active inflammation in the small intestine. This can lead to a deficiency in this essential B-vitamin.

  • Calcium and Vitamin D Deficiency: Individuals with IBD, especially those who have undergone surgical removal of parts of the intestine, may have difficulty absorbing calcium and vitamin D. This can contribute to bone health issues, such as osteoporosis.

  • Zinc Deficiency: Inflammation and malabsorption in the small intestine can lead to zinc deficiency in individuals with IBD.

  • Magnesium Deficiency: Diarrhea, common in IBD, can lead to increased magnesium loss. Additionally, inflammation and malabsorption can contribute to magnesium deficiency.

  • Protein-Calorie Malnutrition: Reduced food intake, malabsorption, and increased nutrient needs due to inflammation can contribute to protein-calorie malnutrition in individuals with IBD.

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acid Deficiency: Inflammation can disrupt the balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, potentially leading to deficiencies in omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Vitamin A and Vitamin K Deficiencies: Malabsorption and inflammation can affect the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, such as vitamin A and vitamin K.
